My Engineering Story: Aleksandar, IP Design Verification Engineer

While I did have a bit of self-doubt if this is for me and if I can do it well, this was gone after the first week internship. It turned out that the knowledge I gained from my studies was enough and that digital verification is quite a fascinating field!

As long as I can remember, I had a strong love for computer sciences and technology in general. I believe it began when my parents got our first MS-DOS PC. While incomparable to anything we have today, at the time it was quite a technological advancement, and I was awestruck. Initially it was just a fun game box for me but as time passed, I was getting more and more curious on how this “magic” box worked. From that moment on, I would keep on asking questions and seeking answers to understand how technology works.

Over the years, this curiosity of mine would stick with me, push me in the direction of natural sciences and eventually I would go to the Faculty of Electrical engineering in the University of Belgrade.

During my third year of studies, I would go to the Job Fair looking for internship opportunities and this is where I had my first contact with Elsys. While I did get a nice goodie bag from the Elsys booth, at first, I didn’t consider it a serious option for me. I was in the Department of Computer Science and our primary focus was more software oriented and another important factor was that I could not understand what I would be doing.

It was only after attending “Computer Systems for VLSI” in my final year that I started to have an idea what digital design and verification is. It piqued my interest, so I applied for the internship for digital verification, passed all the technical interviews and was accepted as an intern at Elsys. While I did have a bit of self-doubt if this is for me and if I can do it well, this was gone after the first week internship. It turned out that the knowledge I gained from my studies was more than enough and that digital verification is quite a fascinating field!

After successfully finishing the internship program, the job opportunity came, I accepted it and since then I’m working as a Digital verification engineer here at Elsys.

I would say digital verification represents the ideal intersection of software and hardware, combining the best of both worlds. It’s not purely software development or solely hardware engineering, but a unique field that requires a deep understanding of both disciplines.

Another way to describe this job is to quote an older colleague: “The beauty of this job is that you get to tell someone ‘This isn’t good’ and they will say ‘Thank you’ “.
